Modelers 1999 Jordan J199

Post by dlphnfn »

Felt like building something quick to get back into it. It's been a while since I've built much... I grabbed a couple egg planes, but they didn't really do it for me. Then I tried a 1/43 Peugeot 905 Starter kit. It turned out ok, but not really what I was hoping to kick start me... On to this J199 kit. I've never built a multimedia (resin, white metal, photoetch) kit before. This one is starting out pretty good though. Not much difference in prep. I've replaced some of the white metal with plastic sheet and/or a f2001 Ferrari. (Rest in peace, Ferrari F2001!!)
On to the pics/progress.
Red and black plastic is from the Ferrari kit. the rear spoiler will end up with only the base attachment piece from the kit. All others are modified from the Ferrari kit and scratch built end plates.
Image

End plates are just scratch built from plastic sheet. I wanted to better replicate the Italian GP (Win). The white metal pieces are super thick. Here are a couple prototypes. The red ones are from the Ferrari kit, which won't work.
Image

Front arms and dash piece are all made from sheet plastic as well. They didn't fit well enough and I couldn't figure out a way to extend and shape the white metal.
Image

After seeing Will Chans WIP on this (I bought his Modeler Site WIP as well) I thought I'd try the wings coming off in front of the intakes too... I also extended the rear floor in front of the tires.
Image

All panel lines have been rescribed. Some needed to be deeper, some even out (side to side) and some were missing.
Image

My floor after many scratch built parts from sheet plastic!!

Hi Dlphnfn,

I like the progress you've made replacing numerous items from sheet styrene.

Any thoughts over which paint and carbon fibre decals you'll be planning to use? How did you find the fit of the floorpan to the body, any glaring gaps or ill-fitting areas?

Always liked the Jordan J199 livery. Will look forward to seeing your updates.

Cheers, Paul
Sydney, Oz.

Nice start, looking forward to seeing this one develop. It's always good to see someone prepared to hack away at a resin kit to get their desired result, even if it's scary to do yourself!

Thanks guys. Good to see some old faces/login names. :D
Paul, the chassis fit was pretty good. Seemed like the chassis was a tick wider, I had to shave a bit off the outside of the floor to match the width of the floor. Other than that, my only gripe are the panel lines, but after hitting them with the backside of an exacto blade, they look really nice. I can't complain too much about that though, it is a model after all! 8)

Little more done on the Jordan. I've got it wrapped in primer. I have a couple details to pick out (like the front wing supports need better panel lines), but this is more or less it until it hits paint. Lots of CF decals coming up too!

A little more progress on the Jordan.
Made another set of wing plates. I think I'm finally satisfied...

Body in primer
Image

Plank. I just did a quick job with Tamiya weathering kit. Still need to clean up the CF around the screw holes it looks like...
Image

Yellow spoon test. I'll be going with regular TS16 Yellow (right).
Image
Image

Carbon Fiber party. Some MFH, KA, Scale Motorsport and Tamiya. The Tamiya was surprisingly easy to work with. It was also the newest.
Image

Tires are complete. I added air valves from Top Studio.

Moving on to the barge boards before I start applying yellow.
