1/20 2019 Mclaren MCL34 Scratch Build - Lando Norris

Post by Tyrone »

Hello, me again, doing something out of the ordinary, as usual!

After my last custom build (the 2018 Red Bull turned out so well) I decided to go down the route of 3D printing again, but this time I have purchased my own printer!

At the moment this kit is scratch built, but I may end up just buying a 2017 Ferrari to use the floor, wheels and suspension.

The source of the 3D model this time is from a video game called Assetto Corsa, a group made all of the 2019 cars, so I took the files for the McLaren MCL 34 and started Chopping it up into parts to fit onto my printer.

The printer I got is from Amazon and prints with photosensitive resin, it’s slower than a standard plastic printer, but allows for more detail.

Image

My first prints didn’t go to plan, as I learned how to use it, and how fast to print to the desired level of detail

Image

This print failed because the supports were not strong enough.

You can see the front wing drooped forward as it’s supports no longer held it in place,

Image

Printing parts can take a long time!

Image

Left and right bits of the nose, and a better front wing, were the result of turning up the exposure time from 6s to 7.5s giving the supports more strength as they had cured more. I also increased the support width by about 10%.

Next I did the front of the chassis

Then I filled the build plate with a lot of the rear cowling, and details such as rear wing, mirrors etc.

Image

Image

This is the car and all of it parts next to my 2018 Red Bull, as you can see the proportions look correct.

The rear wing is printed entirely in one piece, as I usually make them wonky when building them from kit parts. You can see all of the little aero slants and cuts are all showed in the print.

Image

The baregeboards, I may have gone a little too far with thickening these bits up,

Image

Image

But it’s no worse than the shark fin thickness on the 2017 Mercedes from MONOPOST!!!

The parts, all fit together very well, look at the joins on the nose cone, they’re already glued - the rest kind of fits loosley as it has an uneven bottom shape.

As usual Decals will be from Pattos Place, but I'm quite tempted to give the Spot Model service a try.

After the body is all joined together, and one single peice i’ll make the decision as to whether I should buy the sf70h kit for the floor, wheels etc, or print them myself.

So far I have used around £9 worth of resin.

Thanks for looking!

I used these models for the Mclaren, but you'll need Assetto Corsa Content mnager to do anything with them, as they're designed for use with the game.

https://www.acfligue.fr/produit/acfl-f1 ... tto-corsa/

They are also simple, therefore easier to print with a 3D printer.

You can get more accurate 3d files from here, https://www.racedepartment.com/download ... hop.27469/

but the models need more work to make printable.

Not sure if this is a criticisim of the wings being a little chunky, which is fair enough, as it's my first 3d print and I already had the wing fail, so probably over did it - or if the beginning of the title missed your attention!
