McLaren MP4/9 conversion from Tamiya MP4/8 (Completed)

Post by Hein »

Hi guys,

Started a new project last week, bought a Tamiya MP4/8 and a set of MP4/9 decals. a lot more changes than i first thought. but a lot of fun.
It will be the 1994 Monaco car of Martin Brundle with the extended rear wing.

Very brave to tackle such a project! Nice car even though the Peugeot wasn't that spectacular!
I also thought MP4/8 and MP4/9 are quite close but probably not...I remember the sidepods are much shorter.
The nose should be the same, right?

I will be following with interest.

I have the same decalset, so you can count me in for this WIP, too.
So far your conversion looks very promising. :D

Yes the side pods are shorter, this also infuence the area in front of the side pods, near the cockpit edges, different angle and shape.
The airbox /engine cover back is more sharp edged, mp4/8 had a more curved round shape edge. Splitter/T-tray area is different. Nose is indeed more or less the same.

Started changing the engine cover shape by building it up with styrene strips and sand it to shape, more sharp edged instead of round like it was.

Loved MP4/9, MP4/10 and MP4/11.... they are forgotten cars in F1 plastic kits.... in fact we didn't have many plastic kits between 1994-1997.... I tried the same conversion but my skill is not good enough so I gave up many years ago, very happy to follow such conversion again :-)

very nice building, my convertion was not accurate and so difficult to get closer to real one...anyway! You got a great result.

Found some time to work on the front wing end plates. At monaco they used the "curved" wing end plates.

I remember watching Monaco that year, first race since losing Aryton and Roland.
Martin Brundle in the Mclaren was spinning the wheels up and leaving tyre marks lap after lap leaving the Antony Nughes corner. Looked fantastic.
