1/20 2018 Red Bull RB14 - from Tam SF70H
Okay... Here we go.
I'm about to embark on my most ambitious project yet. The aim is to get a Red Bull Rb14 from the Tamiya SF70H.
I'll be using a mix of 3D printed parts and scratchbuilt bits with plasticard, putty etc.
So I play a lot of the F1 racing games, and one of the things that happens in the games is the livery's are censored, as to not advertise alcohol products in a video game. Take for example the 2017 Williams Car.
You can see the Red Martini stripe is gone entirely!
So what people do is modify the files of the game to restore the cars looks to how it should be. Evolving from that, users will often make their own liverys up from scratch, or inspired by historic ones.
Example of this here - somebody has made a fantasy Jaguar livery.
Now, in order to make the production of these liverys easier, a kind soul has made 3D photoshop files, using files from the F1 game - as a base, and you can use these to paint (in 3D!) onto the side of the F1 cars!
Here's my attempt at putting the F1M logo on the side of the 2009 Brawn GP car (yes the 2018 game has some older cars in it!)
Okay Okay, get to the point Tyrone!
Now that important information is out of the way you can probably guess what happens next! the game obviously has the 2018 Red Bull car in it, So I took these files that allow you to paint the cars, and opened them up in Blender, a 3D modelling software.
I don't claim to be anything special when it comes to 3D modelling so over the last few days i've been figuring out the best way to cut, crop, fill and export all these different Red Bull body parts, ready to stick onto the Tamiya SF70H kit.
Now you could just 3D print the whole car in 1/20 scale - but where's the fun in that? also 3D printing is £$£$£$£$£ Expensive!!!! so small parts is my limit!
I've just sent 5 parts off to be printed - these are:
the sidepod boards.
the sidepod wings + mirrors
and the nose!
The Roll Hoop / Air Scoop / halo is the SF71H bits from Smirkoff on Shapeways.

Next the Decals - obvious stop is Pattos Place

I have asked for the blue paint colour to be removed.
Speaking of colour... I'll probably try and mix my own from some red and blue Zero Paints leftovers.
For the rest of the car i'll mostly be using the tamiya kit, i'll be sculpting the odd 'cola bottle' area by hand, as printing this, and getting it to fit the tamiya kit proves to be a huge challenge. A bit of hand sculpting didn't look too bad on my SF14-T - I made the nose from a mess of plastic, lets try the Red Bull Next!
Also I did consider getting the SF70H Carbon Fiber decals from Studio27 but i've been working on a Sauber C31 with those decals and having a horrible time with them? They DON'T BEND into place!!!!
Also the 3D model makes great reference materials!

Nice use of other resources to get more of the grid as a scale model! A lot of effort but you look to have a good plan. Looking forward to the finished product.

I will follow with interest. Had the same plans of turning the SF70H into RB14.
