Tamiya Ferrari SF70H
I started this while I was finishing up the Sauber C30. I purchased the Studio 27 CF decal template set as well as Gravity Colors SF70H red.
After researching how this kit goes together I decided to assemble the monocoque and the main sidepod pieces before painting. The seam that would appear at the front of the sidepods isn't present on the real car so I glued and sanded down the seam. The fit is so precise that I didn't even need filler. I also attached some of the small winglets that appear on the side of the monocoque. I also scribed the panel lines and drilled out the rivet holes a bit. These tend to be filled in quite easily by layers of paint.
The body parts were sprayed with Splash Paints white primer, which is actually more like a very light gray, followed by Gravity Colors SF70H red. The parts to be painted white are on hold while I wait for some Tamiya TS-26 pure white to arrive which I will decant. I bought Duplicolor Universal White last week to use instead of the pricier Tamiya TS-26, but it actually turned out to be more of a creamy white than pure white.

Re: Tamiya Ferrari SF70H
Well, I ran in to some issues masking the engine cover. I painted the engine cover with Duplicolor Universal White. It went on pretty smooth with no issues. I then applied the masking tape over the white. I noticed one of the lines was a little jagged so I trimmed the tape with an x-acto blade. I didn't realize I trimmed through the paint in the process and proceeded to spray the red. When I removed the masking tape it also removed some of the white paint exposing the primer underneath.
I then "reverse masked" the engine cover to respray the white. This backfired. It removed some red paint in the process, so I just tossed it in some brake fluid.
After a soak in brake fluid I resprayed the engine cover with white primer, masked off the shark fin and sprayed the red. Much better!

Some builds are just too combative, aren't they ? Others go smooth. Go figure.
Perseverance is the key, though, imho. Good recovery.

Re: Tamiya Ferrari SF70H
Thanks! I'm trying. I just managed to chip some of the red paint on the left sidepod after sliding the winglet piece in place... yet another one to recover from!lezdep wrote:Some builds are just too combative, aren't they ? Others go smooth. Go figure.

Re: Tamiya Ferrari SF70H
I think the engine cover has been saved. We'll see if it survives clear coating.
I also made some more progress on the monocoque. I used the supplied masks to mask the monocoque and sprayed it with decanted TS-29 semi gloss black. I then applied all the sponsor logos as well as the carbon fiber decals on the underside/sides as well as inside these crazy complicated sidepods. I actually chipped some paint while inserting the sidepod winglets but managed to touch it up with a fine brush and the body color paint. I should be able to clear this after I do some more cleaning up. I also started applying carbon fiber decals to the front wing.
