2014 Ferrari F14 T - 1/20 (Conversion from Fujimi F138)

Post by Tyrone »

Hi, I'm back again with another work in progres thread.

As I continue on my quest to seemingly only be building cars that are hard to find kits, I decided that as the only option for the F14 T is the AMC kit which is no longer available I would make my own.
Using an F138 as the base, this thread will document my progress.

So - the F14T, looks significantly different from the F138, due to the 2014 regulations that were introduced at the time. The nose is, well - entirely different.

I started by constructing the nose as instructed in the instructions.
Image

Then I cut the tip of the nose off to use later.
Image

Then I used some sprue to add this joint from haflway across the nose to the bottom of the pillars.
Image

Next I glue the cut off tip onto the front wing pillars
Image

Then I started to fill in the area with epoxy glue and milliput to give it strength.
Image
Image

Then using parts of the nose that I cut off, I placed them on the new section I had made, perfect as they are the correct width.
Image

In the background you can see I used a 1:24 scale model that was about £8 on ebay as reference, but it's not accurate enough to do a full copy, so I used millions of reference images as well.
Even pics of the AMC kit from Kars' website http://www.racingkars.nl/index.php/k2-i ... raikkoenen Thanks Kars!!!!

I used some more plastic to fill in the gaps
Image

then I used resin copies of the cameras that come in the 2015 Ebbro mclaren. and added more milliput.
Image

Image

Sanded down it looked OK but had too much 'bend' across the top, the real car was more square. I came back to fix this later in the build
Image

Next the exhause opening at the back of the car.
Image

A drinking straw is the perfect size!!!
Image

add in some resin copies of the ebbro mclaren opening
Image

cut off the f138 exhaust outlets from the sidepods
Image

Fill in the gaps and add more putty to the nose.
Image

Pink primer and the finished nose shape, also note the re-shapes roll hoop intake.
Image

My innovative 'mirror holders' whilst the glue sets, and a pic of the current work in progress builds.
Image

Rear wing holding up bits / supports were made from plasticard and the endplates are the f138 bits but with added plasticard to fill in the gaps.
Image

Front wing is chopped down to reflect the 2014 size shrinking in width, but not happy with this so might use mclaren one.

Very brave!

But very good progress! That is quite a bit of plastic sculpting and it looks well made!

Nice work. I do like to see plastic being cut and putty applications. Old school modelling. Keep at it.

I'd also point at bravery here, but specially at great craftmanship :D
A clear idea, knowing how to get there, and actually making it.
That's quite promising. Will watch with interest

Because, as with all builds nothing ever goes well, the masking I tired let a load of black seep through, there must have been a gap I didn't spot, and when removing the masking tape I knocked both wing mirrors off...

In an attempt to not have to re-do everything I added some red to the clear and cleared over the red, this worked a charm and that additional red in the clear covered over the black leaks - few!.... UNTIL
THE CLEAR RAN, into the black bits, taking the added red down over the blacks. - at least this will all be covered in carbon fiber in the end anyway, it's only in place to cover any bits of carbon I couln't be bothered to do, but now it looks like I'll be bothered enough to do all of the carbon to cover the swirly red patterns!!!

Image

Look along the bottom of the car there is a lot of different carbon patterns used, from 'dots' at the front, to larger 'checkerboard' at the back.

I think I have a good representation of the nose shape though!
Image

What an ugly looking car!

- Still looking for that F2008 guys

I did not want to be the first to say it, but yes, the F14T was something that could keep the kids awake at night!
I was surprised night races were not declared "18+"!

I guess Ferrari, like other teams, did not want to redesign their chassis, and reused last years chassis, updated with the new year's parts. (?)
Just like the time all cars had a step in their nose, as the teams reused the previous years chassis.

Shame about the running paint, but otherwise, you are making great progress

Savings in F1? HA! :D nope, specially considering the hybrid era started... basically rules still allowed that chassis height and teams went for the maximum, as it was (and still is) an "as much as you can get" feature, like, say, the wings width.
I thought the F14T to be ugly in the beginning but somehow I learnt to like it later. Probabl because it's between the nose tall F138 (ugly in full front view IMHO), and the "long tongue" F15T.
Nevertheless beauty and F1 are definitely divorced, a bit as what happens with today's rallycars.
