Re: MFH Porsche 917 Le Mans Winner 1971 in 1:12 Scale
Hello and thx a lot for your nice comments and interest.
Today's update is about detailing another part of the engine, which is the gear linkage at the right side of the gear box. The MFH part is too simple but provides a good basis that can be greatly improved with some modifications and plenty of extra parts.
This week, I've been again in the Porsche Museum and crawled under the rear end of the original car to get close ups of car details
The gear linkage of the original 917-053 (basically very similar on other 917s)
The MFH original parts
Modified MFH parts and extra details added
Thanks for watching. Next update coming soon.
BR, Uli

Hello,
the engine takes shape little by little. Today's update is about building the BOSCH mechanical injection unit.
MFH did a pretty decent job on the WM parts. Nevertheless with some additional effort, this unit can be further improved.
At the original, the translucent cover is attached to the casted housing by 20 Cross Type Bolts. The MFH Micro Rivets P-911 are ideally suited to reproduce these bolts
Most of the additional parts are off-the-shelf aftermarket parts. The 2 levers (main operating lever and choke control lever) needed to be scratch built. This 2 parts however add a lot to the overall realism of this unit. The shape of this 2 levers did deviate obviously from engine to engine. I took pictures of the engine of 917-021 as reference.
The final result
Still a long way to go until the engine gets finished. Thanks for watching and pls. stay tuned.

Simply incredible! That injection unit is a model is itself.

You know what came to mind when I read about a build like this?
Give a Man a Fish, and You Feed Him for a Day. Teach a Man To Fish, and You Feed Him for a Lifetime..
In other words, its great about posting pics of completed build, but it is detailed step by step builds like this that teach us how to become better at this hobby and push our boundaries. Thanks for sharing your progress and teaching many of us here! Looking forward to more updates!

Hello Uli
Impressive your WIP. There is a lot of work in it. A very good guide for others who opts for a 917. Maybe that's the inspiration to get me one too. I look forward to every update.

Re: MFH Porsche 917 Le Mans Winner 1971 in 1:12 Scale
Hello,
many thx for your very friendly and motivating comments.
The work on the engine continues. Today's update is about mounting the cam covers to the cylinder heads and engine main body and to start with the Throttle Slide Assemblies
A prominent feature of each 917 engine are the red rubber seals (like O-Rings) around the spark plugs which are not part of the MFH kit
These O-Rings can be easily replicated with Evergreen Styrene Tubes
Left/Right Cam Cover sub-assemblies glued in place and top cover made from "glass reinforced plastic" (GPR) added. On the real engine, this cover is attached to the engine with 12 hex bolts each on the front and rear side, which I've reproduced on the model accordingly
Next is working on the Throttle Slide Assemblies. On the real engine, there are a set of four assemblies (1 set per 3 cylinder = two on each bank). MFH did combine the two assemblies of each bank in one casted part. On the MFH part, the linkage between the two are indicated with casted clamping bands. There are reference pictures of engines where four clamping bands on each side are shown. I've reproduced the linkage with black colored Tamiya masking tape and 4 PE clamping bands.
On the front and rear facing side of the Throttle Slide Assemblies, there is a Hex Screw along with a Hex Bolt plus 4 Slotted Screws, which has been reproduced on the model as well with aftermarket parts
Thanks for your interest. Next update soon.

Well done. I'm really enjoying seeing all of this not only for use on my own 917 but it also gives ideas & inspiration for detailing other models.
