Uli, thanks for the link to Miko. I’m “of a certain age” and not on Facebook. In fact, I think my kids would kill me if they ever found out I had an account. It’s bad enough, they think, that I know what Instagram is. In any case, I’m all over the 917 parts. My stash has a 917K in it and, happily, the Sunoco car. As you may guess from my screen name, I’m a Porsche guy....
Best regards,
Bill

Re: MFH Porsche 917 Le Mans Winner 1971 in 1:12 Scale
Hello 917 Fans
While progressing on the completion of the rear frame (subject of next update), I've started also to make some new parts for the brakes.
The Le Mans winning car of '71 had drilled steel brake discs, which are not included in the MFH kit, so I've decided to machine new parts to correct this mistake.
Interestingly, the drilling patterns applied by Porsche have been fairly random to prevent circumferential wear that may damage the disc under race conditions. Also holes on the same radius are well separated from each other to prevent cracks running from hole to hole (see book THE UNDERCOVER STORY).
I've designed a drilling pattern master/template, which depicts this random pattern (and the number of holes) as close as possible (see pic below)
This pattern has to be drilled for 8 Disc parts in total (summing up to almost 900 manually drilled holes of 0,6mm each)
After drilling, each disc is cut on the lathe
The Brake Discs are attached on a mounting flange (called "the Bell"), which I've machined from aluminum
The pic below compares the machined parts and the MFH parts. What is still missing are the new machined central shaft with the central nut and the 5 bolts on the Bell
I'll make a 2nd set of this parts for the upcoming 917/30 kit as MFH most likely will not supply the drilled discs in their new 917/30 kit (at least what could be seen from the parts list posted by MFH) ... so another 900 holes to be drilled .....
Many thx for your time and interest.
BR,
Uli

Very impressive...how many drills have you "killed" during the process
Were are you from ? I really need to come over on see the magic in real live

Duplicating the hole pattern in the brake disks? All I can say is Wow! Very Cool and impressive, but at the same time, it kind of makes me just want to put all my tools away and call it a day. I think the bar just got raised...

Re: MFH Porsche 917 Le Mans Winner 1971 in 1:12 Scale
Hi
... I've killed 2 drills during the process und wohne in der Nähe von Stuttgart, Daniel
F1Noob, I'm sorry, but parts are not intended for sale as don't have a CNC lathe/milling machine. However, if there is a sufficient interest/demand, I may think about to work on/publish a step-by-step e-book on building and super-detailing the MFH Porsche 917's (K, LH, /30) which includes technical drawings of my machined and other scratch build parts at a reasonable price
