Thanks! The airbox tray is a deceptively complex part that's for sure...ziggysdesk wrote:Those kevlar decals look amazing, thanks for sharing the brand.

Next job was to decal the sides and top edge with plain weave carbon/carbon. That was a tricky job:
Once the Sol and Klear was set, masked the edge ready for a few coats of Smoke to tone down the contrast of the carbon/Kevlar:
So now I’ve pretty much got the look I was after:
Next job is to fit the trumpet retainers, their fasteners, and the airbox retainers. Then it’ll have a coat of satin to get rid of the unrealistic reflections:
I think this has been to most difficult decal job I’ve done on any model so far - and it’s only a single part...

That really looks like real CF, very impressive!

I'm using 1:20 scale decals throughout - they are closer to true scale than the 1:12 versions, which to me always seem to shout "look at me I'm carbon fibre!". In reality, at scale viewing distances you sometimes had to look twice to see it's carbon at all.
(...all just my opinion )

Trumpet retainers & fasteners aligned with a drill and fitted with PVA. as were the airbox clips:
Followed by a coat of Tamiya Satin. Still too glossy though. Might have to try Mr Hobby satin.

Just beautiful. The attention to detail is phenomenal.

Thanks guys - much appreciated!
Frustrating work on the rear brake ducts. As per a previous post, I opted to scrap the p/e inners and make my own 4-piece items. This worked well, but I noticed a cracked decal in the inside of one. I tried to flat it back and told myself that putting another decal on top would be ok. I kidded myself into finishing them both before accepting that the repaired one does indeed look crap:
So I’ve dis-assembled the inner plates (only secured with pva luckily), and I’ll have to think how to fill it. I really don’t want to strip the whole thing and start again. Again.
At least the other side looks fine:
Still trying to find a decent satin clear coat. Tamiya is too glossy to my eyes. Might try flat base again but it’s a hassle, and inconsistent too.

For semi flat i use 2k diamond finish and after drying i apply thin coats of zeros smoke paint, that looks very real

Thanks - just for carbon or in general? I want to coat all the engine and transmission bits too.senninha wrote:For semi flat i use 2k diamond finish and after drying i apply thin coats of zeros smoke paint, that looks very real
