My Answer above was about carbon. I cover my engines or mechanic parts in general with flat coat from schmincke

Schmincke? Is that water-soluble matt? I usually use Winsor&Newton Galeria matt which might be similar. It is very, very matt though. I might try 50/50 matt/satin.

yes the schmicke colors are water based, so you can remove the paint if it was too much.

you can see the result here: https://www.f1m.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=30979

Thanks both!

Lost momentum on this one recently. Lots of stuff needed re-doing, and re-doing again because it didn’t look right or whatever. Anyway, I’ve now completed the rear brakes, ducts and uprights.

First, the callipers has their Transfer pipes & nuts, pad retainers, screws, pipe unions and decals added:

Then on to the ducts, which I modded by adding separate inner plates from 0.2 PlaPaper. Fasteners were Top Studio rivet heads. Final assembly was straightforward; I used the original kit screws for the callipers and ducts, but stuck a p/e bolt head over the cross heads:

Now back to the inlet tray and trumpets...

I made a notional airbox seal out of lead wire painted Tamiya Rubber Black:

And tried PVA’ing the trumpets in pairs along their flats to aid alignment:

Then pressed them into their sockets using a slip gauge to keep them level:

Didn’t really work because some were loose in their sockets. Anyway, with some minor adjustments they will be fine. Not glued in place yet, but pretty much there:

The box of completed sub-assemblies is slowly but surely filling up:

Hope so - it’s a bit of a labour of love tbh.

The elephant in the room is the male-mould monocoque, and how to robustly represent the surface. The rest is just cut, drill, bend, file paint and glue. Eventually I’ll have to face up to it and somehow deal with it.

Cheers!

Read your post on the different techniques, I like the masking tape effect but, as someone said, my worry would be the tape lifting over time. I've seen armour modelers paint liquid cement on a surface to soften it and then scuff it to represent a texture. Whether there's anything in that technique that could help you?
