Re: F92A my first WIP
I find all this 3D printing and Shapeways stuff very interesting. It's surely a massive step for model makers and to be able share files so that anyone can purchase a copy. Very clever! The exhausts on your car look superb, a very big enhancement. Look forward to the rest of your build.
Re: F92A my first WIP
Hello all,
Just wanted to advise; After having received my 3D printed copy of Pierluigi's exhaust design via Shapeways I can confirm for you several things.
1) Pierluigi is extremely skilled at CAD work. The design is excellent and the contours are extremely complex shapes that must have taken a lot of CAD work to get perfect, as mentioned by him in the development process where he describes having to make some adjustments. That is a lot of work, and he did it very well.
2) the 3D print version of his design is far, far better than the kit exhaust parts. You knew this from the photos, but in real life It's not even close. Pierluigi's exhausts are even hollow for the last 10mm, looking very good in scale and wall thickness of the exhaust tube. It's impressive that the 3D print can achieve that precision with very few surface ridges and steps. You can perform some sanding to smooth the finish perfectly for the Alclad metal paint, and that will help, but even the basic finish quality without sanding is very good.
3) The optional version where the exhaust is broken into individual pipes for better sanding access is a good option if you want the best metal-look finish possible. You should be prepared to spend some time figuring out how the pipes go together - you'll have to do that manually as the pieces are not numbered, but with some time you should be able to do it. There is an exploded parts diagram on the Shapeways site (it's the design itself) and that should be enough instruction, but still plan to spend some time. Pierluigi has even designed in little tabs and attachment pins for each pipe into the 6-way collector, which is very impressive given how small these parts are.
In summary, excellent work, excellent parts, and well worth the money in my opinion.
Regards,
AJ

Re: F92A my first WIP
Hello all,
AJ I'm very pleased that you like the exhausts!
Even if I'm not using 3D CAD any more in my main work, I'm happy I can still perform some 3D design...
I'm starting my summer holiday and I hope I'll get some progress on the kit soon.
Ciao
Pierluigi

You know, I thought I could try and number the pipes, but doing so I take out half the funAJP01 wrote: ...You should be prepared to spend some time figuring out how the pipes go together - you'll have to do that manually as the pieces are not numbered, but with some time you should be able to do it. Hello all,
I just finished to place flat floor supports and made two notches in the end of the upper floor (as in the real car) in order to get a better exhausts position.

Re: F92A my first WIP
Hi guys!
I finished assembling rear suspension, exhausts are ok, now I'll try some more detailing on engine bay and radiators.
I'm sorry for poor lighting, next pics maybe better in day light.
Ciao

Re: F92A my first WIP
Hi all!
Maybe it's time to get an update... ok, a small update...
Lately I get back some inspiration and restart working on the F92A.
Some wires added and airbox in the making.
Ciao and happy modeling!

Re: F92A my first WIP
Having made this car, as a curbside, I really appreciate what a great job you are making of this kit. The engine bay looks far better than it has any right to. Nice work.
