How To Build A Car by Adrian Newey

Post by F1Xena »

Hi all,

I just read this book recently and highly recommend it. Despite the title, it is actually a (ghost written) autobiography telling of Newey’s life and career. It is an interesting read, both for some background on what happened behind the scenes In many of F1s controversies, as well as the technicalities of some of his designs.

Put it on your Christmas list!

Cheers

Tania

I second the recommendation. It’s a great book. I would also recommend “The Perfect Car” by Nick Sheens which is a bio of John Barnard. It’s over 500 pages and goes into detail on all of his projects.

+1 on both!
The Newey book is the easier read but i found the Barnard book even more interesting.

Read the book from Newey a while ago.
Fun to read. Don't know that he and Jeremy Clarkson where at the same school and both where "special". Great story's.
But was I the only one who could read between the lines that he hates Michael Schumacher? No good word for him. Or was that something with the translation into German language?

Finished the Barnard book last night and agree with earlier comments. He is also not much of a fan of Micheal Schumacher - although to be fair he wasnt much of a fan of almost everyone he worked for!! I loved Adrian's book as so many chapters relate to a Tamiya model! It was interesting to note that both he and Barnard built their reputation with Indycars - before the spec chassis era started. Adrian even knew George Harrison well.

Would love a similar book about Gordon Murray and his Brabhams and Mclaren(s). It would also be rather interesting to read an autobiography from Ron Dennis if he ever did one, assuming it was ghost-written and wasnt just 400 pages of Ron-speak!

I can't remember anything terrible about Schmui in the book, but I could have missed it. I read the English version.

The best book to me is the one by Tony Southgate, it's not well known that this guy designed cars that won Indy 500 miles, Le Mans and Monaco F1 GP :

Another must have is Dan Gurney's eagle racing cars.
As the ultimate fan of Gordon Murray  I got the big book and, having waited 20 years to read it, I've been disappointed.
Another great book for racing cars fans is the one on Ron Tauranac (Brabham, Ralt).
