Re: What do you do for a living when your not building?
I am 55 years young. I always worked at the dutch telephone company KPN. I started there in 1978 and did a lot of jobs.
I did work at the call center , customer administration, archiver for the CEO, customer relations (complaints), salary administration,
bookkeeping, financial administration for the mobile division. At the beginning of this year i got unemployed after 36 years.
Now looking for a new job. Or maybe start my own web shop in a few years (now impossible because of unemployment benefit).
I started modelling at about the age of 12. I started with airplanes, boats, cars and motorcycles and WWII dioramas. Then i stopped for a while
because my interest moved to computing. This was also a necessary to keep my job. I was a nit wit at it.
This self study helped me a lot. I still enjoy computing and therefor started my own web site some months ago.
I picked up the modelling about 2 years ago and decided to do mainly F1 as i enjoy this sport very much. I thought it would be a nice combination.
The first period i only bought kits and found no time to build. I am catching up now.
Every now and then i have another project like building my wooden Bounty or a sci-fi kit.

Actually, it's more accurate to say that I'm 18 with 34 years' experience!Jeep wrote:I'm 52 and a translator.

I'm 37 now. Been working in the same building for 15 years now in Tech Support for a large enterprise level software company. I started for a little ".com" startup back in 99, but have since been through mergers, buyouts, layoffs, layoffs, and more layoffs... Didn't know a thing about F1 until 7-8 years ago. I just love the kits first of all, then I love watching the races...

In an office, and if my boss knew how much time I spent on the internet looking at modelling websites (like now!) I would be in trouble!

Re: What do you do for a living when your not building?
Well, it looks like I am approaching the upper end of the age spectrum here at 21 with 43 years of additional experience(64 for those who are math challenged). I retired last year and am starting my 5th career. I started life as a Nebraska farmer. Joined the Air Force as a pilot in '72. Got out after 9 years and became an insurance agent. Then retail sales for the last 15 years and am now going back to my first love. I am in school to get my FAA certificates to teach ground school to new pilots. I can't be a flight instructor because I can't pass the physical. Been model building since before television was wide spread. Yes, I remember coming home from school and listening to the Lone Ranger on radio!
Re: What do you do for a living when your not building?
I'm 50 and work as 3D modeler/animator/renderer since 1989. So I'm always building something, both in the virtual and the real worlds. In fact I'm more and more mixing the activities, thanks to 3D printing.
Started modelling at 6 years old, with Apollo spaceships (a must at that time...), then WWII hardware, mainly Revell planes, and one or two racing cars. Did a long pause in the 80's, when I turned my attention to music and journalism. I came back to kit building in 1991, thanks to brazilian Tamiya kits (a girlfriend gave me the Wolf WR1 as a gift). Now I have about 200 kits to build, and my retirement is still far away...
Besides modeling I like a lot to do hand drawing and sketching. Used to do comics. Some of my drawings can be seen here: https://www.behance.net/Smirkoff
