Icon Alfa 179 wheels & tires

Post by daves »

Received my replacement wheels and tires for my 1/12th Protar Alfa 179. The quality of the resin casting is superb. As good or better than MFH. My tires had been melting away for several years so I was very happy and surprised that Derek took on this project. I drilled out the resin wheels for tire valves and the rim bolts. Painted with primer, gloss black, clear, and Alclad polished aluminum. A final trick I use is a Japanese chrome powder. This gives the alclad a more polished look.

Hmmm..., by "Japanese chrome powder", I assume you mean Wave's Kosutte-GinSun (or GinSan) product? Very interesting. Thanks for sharing that.

Cheers,
Chris

Hi Dave,
also I am building a Protar 179 kit and I am very interested by Icon wheels and tyres.
Please, can you say me the differences between Icon wheels and Protar kit wheels ?
Thank you,
ciao,
Giovanni La Rosa

P.s.
From my reserch, I think that the wheels color was not polished aluminium, but a silver whit a semi-gloss clear varnish over ( a protective trasparent paint to preserv the wheels).

Hi Wim,
you are right about my slow Alfa building , but the family and my work leave me too little time for the modellism !
But the build continue and now I' m working on the body, the final step.
Can you say me which are the differences between the Icon and Protar kit wheels ?
Thank you,
ciao

I think Derek at Icon could answer the question best. Other than the Protar tires are crap, that is all I can contribute.

Too many kits this month! But soon enough

will all of the front wheels fit the kit's rotors?

My cast resin wheels pictured above are basically the same as the kit wheels but do not have the chunky molded in bead lock bolt details like the kit wheels do. They come with small detents where they should be drilled for your choice of hardware for the bead lock bolts and the air valves. Or you can choose not to add the hardware, Also my 15 inch front wheel pictured above is slightly wider or narrower (I'm not sure now which without looking) then the kit wheels. This is for no other reason then I made a mistake and when discovered it was too late to correct. One last thing I want to point out is that Dave is using these tires and wheels on the 179C. The 179C used Michelin Tires. My tires are Wingfoot and meant for the earlier 179.

They look nice Dave thanks for the props.

Thanks all
