Solverline Shock Absorbers (Shadow DN5)

Post by JH3 »

Having trouble assembling rear shocks for a Silverline Shadow DN5. Parts consist of two turned aluminum shock bodies and a single wire spring. I have yet to find a glue (tried cyano and 2 part epoxy) that will hold the shock bodies together with the springs installed. I've tried trimming down the springs to reduce tension, but this did not work. Have any of you build one of these kits, or a similar model, and have some helpful tips to keeping the shocks together?

I thought about putting a jig together, but I have yet to visualize anything that can hold the uneven ends of the shock bodies together.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks,

JH

There should be a photoetched part were you can "clamp" the shock in between while drying.

Have you considered replacing the spring?

You could make one from a piece of copper wire, then paint it the required colour.

Copper wire will not spring back when it is compressed.

Hi JH,
maybe is the spring to great, count the springturnes, it is possible to cut some turns, you must have a litte pressure on the spring not to much.

I use the following in building 1/12 motorcycles. In order to keep from building entirely new shocks I carefully cut and sand all the spring turns off of the molded part. Then replace with solder wire of the same diameter. Before adding the wire i clean up and paint the shock body or rechrome. As mentioned above, count the turns first or do the shocks one at a time and compare. This way you don't have to worry about the length of the assembly changing.

hope this helps,

joe.

Thanks for all the responses! I did try cutting some of the spring turns, but I deformed the spring and it no longer fit the shock assembly. Then I lost half of the shock after it went flying out of a pair of tweezers...

So, four pair of shocks on the way from Spot Model (I have a few Shadows to build) - I'll look to try each of the different suggestions here.

Thanks!!!
