The loss of Villeneuve was tremendous due to how close he was to his 1st WDC in 1982. Had he lived we would have seen a dynamic and hard fought championship between him and Didier. It was unfortunate to lose Didier as well from GP in 1982. The issues in San Marino I am sure would have been resolved in time as the championship went on.

I cannot agree more, Steve.
Cheers for the great Gilles, wherever you are, champion!

Re: Gilles Villeneuve 08.05.1982 - 08.05.2018
I was fortunate to be able to see Gilles, and Didier qualify and race in Long Beach, back in 1981.
That was a very expensive trip out to California, from New Mexico, but was worth every penny.
I was able to meet Mr. Pironi at the Drivers tents set up on Thursday, but Gilles was not present.
I'm sure he was spending time with his family in their mobile home.
What I remember the most about that trip was sneaking between 2 buildings and dropping from a wall
down to the Staging area for the cars - for the mechanics to tune the various engines - the sounds were very
loud, and bounced off the walls of the various buildings surrounding the little area outside the garage that
all the teams shared. I think I shot about 6 rolls of film in that little area of the Ferrari 126 CX...But I need to check
and see if it was the Supercharged engine or the turbo charged one that I was shooting.
I'll never forget the Ferrari mechanics tuning the engine, and talking to each other in Italian - probably saying
" who is this kid taking all of these photos"...but I don't think they cared too much, as I stayed out of their way.
When I started laying on the ground to take some "special shots", I got busted by the security personnel.
They asked me for my credentials - and I responded "Credentials? - what Credentials?"
They kindly escorted me to the gate, but when I sneaked back in for round two, they weren't so happy with me!
Try doing that today...IndyGP2001
I have missed you Gilles for almost 40 years!

As soon as I can find them in my Garage, I will try and scan them, and post them on the Forum.
Take care, Kirk
