Alonso: Retiring from F1 at the end of the season.
No news on his plans for other racing series.
Sad end to an amazing driver's career.

Re: Alonso Retiring.
Specifically only from F1. All indications are that he's going to Indycar, as Andretti gave him a clear order that if he wanted to switch they needed an answer soon and couldn't wait until the end of season.

Title updated to clarify - he's leaving F1 at the end of the year. People are speculating about whether he'll do Indycar, Rally, the Tour de France or something else, but no news so far. Just, he won't be in F1 next year.

Bet the promoters of the Spanish GP are a bit worried now.

He'll still be in WEC at least.MoFo wrote:Title updated to clarify - he's leaving F1 at the end of the year. People are speculating about whether he'll do Indycar, Rally, the Tour de France or something else, but no news so far. Just, he won't be in F1 next year.

Re: Alonso: Retiring from F1 at the end of the season.
This does not come as a real surprise, but still sad to see him go. Apparently modern F1 has too many good drivers to find a top team willing to give him a spot (and set the team on fire)?
I must admit I was not a fan right from the start, but some of my best memories as an F1 (and a Ferrari) fan are tied to Alonso. Being part of the Monza crowd cheering him on to victory in 2010 was one of them, and how exciting to see Alonso dragging every bit out of the car (inferior to at least the Red Bulls) and almost making it! Unfortunately, I also watched him fail to make the first lap in Suzuka 2012, a race which arguably cost him the title in 2012 (and yet, persistently he got so close again). And while it was clear his McLaren adventure wouldn't bring major successes, I always keep an eye on the leaderboard during the first lap of a race to see how many places he makes up.
I hope he has a good run in Indycars to reclaim a top seat in 2-3 years' time, as I still think he has some unfinished business in F1.

Re: Alonso: Retiring from F1 at the end of the season.
Sad news as I thought he has had terrible luck with the recent teams he has been with.
Honda-McLaren sounded so positive but that has been massively disappointing. It was painful also to watch the Ferrari years start so good only for the development lag as the year went on which would cost him a chance at the championship.
It wold have been nice to see a 3 way fight at the front between Alonso, Hamilton and Seb.
I do hope to see him back in F1. I suspect he is off to try and win the Indy 500.

Re: Alonso: Retiring from F1 at the end of the season.
If he leaves now he won't be back. I've always thought that there's been something weird how he's resigned himself to fighting at the back of the pack for the last few years. For someone as competitive as him he seems to have been able to accept not winning, or even been on the pace, far too easily yet he has also never appeared to give up and race for the money in the way Nelson Piquet did at Lotus. I think a lot of the troubles that Mclaren are going thru now started to come about as a result of the '07 season and all the turmoil and fallout that occurred.
