ESPN USA F1 Coverage

Post by PJE »

I just set up my DVR for the upcoming Australian GP coverage on ESPN2. I found that besides the race broadcast there is qualifying, but no coverage of practice 2 as we have gotten on both NBCSN and Speed/Fox previously. Did I miss it, or is this what were stuck with?

Anything not on ESPN1 or 2 is on ESPN3 which I think is streaming only.

There's also the new F1 OTT streaming service which will carry all sessions live and on races demand. Due to be released on the 22nd.

Why in the world did ESPN get F1 back? Does that mean we'll get 3/4 of a screen with the rest telling me amateur basketball scores or what Eldrick had for breakfast? There's a reason I quit watching things on those channels long ago, I hate ESPN.

They bid more than others.

It will be the sky feed, which is the same commentators as the US streaming feed will get.

This is why NBC did not want F1 anymore. They would not have exclusive broadcast rights within the USA

Correct. I spoke to Will Buxton at the US GP last fall. He seemed genuinely gutted that NBC had lost the contract and the entire gang will be replaced by the Sky team feed.

He also suggested that the amount of coverage would be reduced -- time will tell if that is true.

I for one will miss Hobbs and Matchett in particular but also Leigh Diffey and Will. Listening to them was a very familiar ritual although I suspect the Sky coverage will be very good (and perhaps even better for a sophisticated F1 viewer).

An unfortunate hallmark of ESPN coverage back in the early 90s was race coverage being delayed or shifted to other channels based on other events running long. And I remember one particularly awful year when the Australian GP was not shown in favor of a re-run of an Iron Man competition.....
