Try soaking inWD-40, it removes the gum from the tape. Then wash it and glue it down with Future or thinned white glue. Use ammonia to remove excess Future.

I use a metal circle template. Get the appropriate size and lay tape across hole and a cut with a sharp blade.

I have noticed this problem is worse with specific colors. The clears TS80, TS79 and TS13 seem to be the worst. One thing that seems to help is not shaking the can vertically. Just make the marble stir the paint by moving the can side to side in a circular motion.

I would have added plastic strips to the body as needed till it fits, before any painting was done. Unfortunately adding plastic would be even worse, if anything plastic needs to be taken off, as much as possible, but then again this trick still won't be enough to solve the problem. Let it soak in lacquer thinner till it dissolves. No brushing necessary, wipe off with a Q-Tip if necessary.
