Champ Car + IRL = ?

As has been noted, Champ Car and the IRL announced their merger today to form a single, unified open wheel racing series here in the US.

I have no idea if this is good or not....

This news is not unexpected.  The problem is, it is only going to prolong the steady absurd decline of open wheel racing in the US.  What has changed?  We lost one of two "SPEC" racing series in this country.  Big deal.  I went to my first Indy 500 when I was 4 yrs old.  I have sponsored(minor sponsor) on six occasions.  I count several of the old winners as friends and can tell you that I am not celebrating at all.  The stale state is still there.  "SPEC" series.  Prediction:  The IRL will be bought  by some very large racing organization with-in the next two years.    This organization will know how to put on a show and what the attraction of a variety of name plates on the cars can do.  This is only a personal opinion.  The least the IRL could do is let Honda keep the nice engine contract they have but encourage at least two other chasis builders to enter the fray.  Then, they need to let limited work on the chassis to encourage technological development.

I am glad I was brought up like a lot of guys in the Mid-west, by being taken to Indy.  It is still a special place.  I started off watching a Scotsman named Clark and got to see Hill, and then Foyt .  I was even there for Mario's one and only win.  But, look at what Indy stood for.  Innovation.  Creativity.    In one of my talks with Bobby Unser, he shared with me all of the little things that he and the guys used to do for speed.  He showed me machines that he made or adapted to research different areas for improvement.    NASCAR has more innovation allowed per car than a current IRL car.  There is so damn little that the engineers can do.

Very frustrated.
