MP 4/6 Carbon Tub

I have looked at all pictures I can find of the McLaren MP 4 cars.  The Cockpit tub looks like it has a linear gold pattern in the Carbon fiber.  The best photos I have found are of the MP 4/5.  In some photos the tub looks monocromatic but in others it has a distinct pattern.  I believe this is from how the light hits the carbon.  I don't think any carbon fiber decals on the market accurately replicate that look.  I will be building a Tamiya 1/12 MP 4/6.  I plan on starting with a base semigloss black and then mist on a gold tone paint or tamiya dark yellow.  Then I plan to over spray thin coats until just a hint of the underlying yellow gold shines through.   I wanted to know if anyone has a better idea or has a specific paint combination they think works best.

MP 4/6 Carbon Tub

I think I described it in the thread, but here it is.

a mix of dark copper and black (tamiya enamel) went down first, probably about 3/1 mix. can't remember exactly

then thin coat of turn signal amber (testors enamel) - looks bright in the pic probably from the flash

Then thin coat of smoke (tamiya enamel), then mask off panels and another light coat of smoke

put decals on

seal everything with a couple of light coats of satin clear (humbrol enamel I think)

Hope this helps. you may want to practise a bit. I made lots of mistakes before I got it right.

This is what I did. Think it

This is what I did. Think it looks pretty convincing in person, and colour changes with the light level.

Thanks   I think your version

Thanks

I think your version is one of the closes I have seen for matching the right look.  Was your base color gold?
